Petula Clark loves to perform, and she’s described her connection with her audience as a “communion.” After seeing her live over seventy times since 1967, from Toronto to New York, to Melbourne, Australia, to Paris, London and beyond, I can attest that she is absolutely correct. Her interaction with the audience truly transcends.
When my husband and I reached retirement, we discovered a sort of fountain of youth. It wasn’t one that made us physically younger, but it gave us the same enthusiasm and sense of adventure we had in our youth.
In our senior years, we got to do something we never could have when we were younger: follow our favorite singer, the one whose music had been the soundtrack to our falling in love. Now we could afford the time and expense of spending at least a few weeks every year following Petula Clark around the world. We watched night after night as people rose to their feet, applauding and exclaiming how wonderful the concert had been. What added to the delight was that each time we heard the opening chords to “Downtown”, signalling the end of the performance, we experienced the same reaction : a combination of sadness-“Oh,no it’s almost over” coupled with anticipation for the next time! We did all of this while touring throughout seven countries on three continents.
